A2. Research Abstract

Summarise in 200 words what you want to research, how you intend to research through particular activities of creative practice, and your rationale and objectives in doing so.

Abstract

My background as a practitioner and pedagogue started in 2006 as a symbiotic relationship with both careers developing in parallel. As I now undertake a more administrative/managerial role within academia and as my practice builds a corpus of works, I continue to teach and practice in a dialectic nature with the opportunity to see design from these two often tensioned perspectives.

Through a critical reflection of my working and teaching processes, the acts of thinking and making through tracing, notation and annotation emerged as a core element that was developed from early projects on traditional media to more recent digital production methods, cutting across teaching, learning and practice. These practices within my practice remain key to the way I think, iterate, articulate and communicate across my various roles.

In my research, I examine the use of annotation through my practice and pedagogical processes, both as a design tool for commentary and critique, as well as a process that enables criticality. I seek to articulate the tenets of a critically annotated process as a way of thinking through and actualising  design, with the aim of deriving meaningful design outcomes that emerge

Abstract

My background as a practitioner and pedagogue started in 2006 as a symbiotic relationship with both careers developing in parallel. As I undertake a more administrative role within academia and as my practice matures, I continue to work in a dialectic nature with the unique opportunity to see design from two often tensioned perspectives.

Through a critical reflection of my working and teaching processes, the act of thinking by tracing, notation and annotation emerged as a core element that is evident from early projects on printed media to more recent digital production methods, cutting across teaching, learning and practice. The mark-up, a widespread and unassuming tool, remains integral to the way I think, iterate, articulate and communicate across my various roles.

In my research, I examine the use of annotation through my practice and pedagogical processes, both as a design tool for commentary and critique, as well as a process that enables criticality. I seek to articulate the tenets of a critically annotated process as a design methodology, with the aim of deriving meaningful design outcomes that emerge between the space of practice and pedagogy, decision and iteration, actualisation and representation, as well as pragmatism and poetics.

Abstract

This PhD is a commentary, criticism and critical review of design practice and pedagogy through the experiences and opportunities (natural history) of the principal of A01, Ang Xinwei. The research seeks the emergence of new knowledge on the design process through a critical reflection of past projects and thoughtful engagement in current projects to establish a framework for criticality in design practice that is both meaningful and communicable for future practice and pedagogy.

Areas of Interest: Design process, Iteration, Rigour, Pragmatics and Poetics, Context, Criticality, Mapping, Representation, Actualisation, Pedagogy
